Half a day covers the whole sequence: the carver cutting a block in teak, the dye pits and what goes into each colour, and then two hours at your own table printing a length of cloth. Registration is harder than it looks and your first metre will show it, which is rather the point.

You take the cloth with you, damp and smelling of the pits. If you would rather have it finished properly, the yard washes and cures it and we courier it on - usually three weeks.

Mornings are better; the light is good and the pits are fresh. The yards run all year, but the monsoon slows drying and the printing tables move under cover, which makes the whole thing less pleasant than it should be.
